(project OPUS)
The project undertakes the analysis of the relationships between man and environment in the Eastern Himalayan region in the light of latest achievements and hypotheses of the theory of environmental degradation. The testing area for the verification of hypothesis about the dominant role of extreme events (such heavy rains, mass movements and floods) in comparison to human activity in transformation of the environment of the Sikkimese-Bhutanese Himalaya region, receiving highest rainfall at the whole Himalayan front.
Presented project attempts to determine a relative importance of human impact as compared to the natural processes in transformation of environment of the Sikkimese-Bhutanese Himalayan region over last 150 years. The impact of extreme events and human activity will be evaluated through analyses of rainfalls, land use changes and soil properties in the context of mountain-piedmont linkages.
